Consciousness returned to Itus slowly, like waves lapping at the shore of his mind. His eyes fluttered open, struggling to focus in the dim light. He found himself lying on a makeshift bed, damp cloths draped over his body. Confusion washed over him as he took in his surroundings—a simple tent with various supplies scattered about, his backpack resting in a corner.
"Where...?" Itus croaked, his voice weak and unfamiliar to his own ears.
He struggled to sit up, every muscle in his body protesting the movement. What happened to me? He wondered, his mind foggy. The last thing I remember is the desert, the heat, and... a mirage?
With great effort, Itus managed to stand, his legs wobbly beneath him. He stumbled out of the tent, squinting as the bright sunlight assaulted his eyes. Before him lay a small camp with several tents, and a group of Miereses going about their daily tasks. They were dressed in practical, desert-appropriate clothing, moving with the ease of those long accustomed to the harsh environment.
An older woman approached Itus, a kind smile gracing her weathered features.
"Ah, you're awake," she said, her voice warm and soothing. "We were starting to worry."
Itus blinked, trying to make sense of the situation. "Who are you? Where am I?" he asked, still disoriented.
The woman's smile never faltered as she replied, "We're the Dune Walkers. We found you collapsed in the desert three days ago. You're lucky to be alive."
The revelation hit Itus like a physical blow. Three days? he thought, shocked. I've been unconscious for three days? His legs began to wobble, and the woman quickly moved to support him.
"Easy now," she said gently. "You're still weak. Come, sit by the fire, and have some water."
She guided Itus to a small campfire where others were gathered. A young man handed Itus a water skin, his eyes filled with concern.
"Drink slowly," he advised. "Your body needs to readjust."
Itus took small sips, relishing the cool liquid as it soothed his parched throat. He looked around at the unfamiliar faces, gratitude welling up inside him.
"Thank you all for saving me," he said, his voice stronger now. "I... I thought I was prepared for this journey, but clearly, I was wrong."
An elderly man seated by the fire chuckled softly. "It's not your fault," he said, his eyes twinkling with wisdom. "This heat is one only Miereses can handle without injury. Plus, with the desert, it was a recipe for disaster. The desert humbles even the most prepared."
Itus nodded, a rueful smile tugging at his lips. "I see that now," he admitted. He hesitated for a moment before continuing, "I know I probably shouldn't have been out here, but I was looking for something."
The older woman who had first greeted him tilted her head curiously. "What were you looking for?" she asked.
Itus paused. "Um... the Heralds of Vignus," he said finally, his voice barely above a whisper.
The Dune Walkers exchanged glances, their expressions turning serious. Itus felt a chill run down his spine, despite the desert heat.
"We know of them," the older woman said carefully. "But you shouldn't worry about that now. First, you need to regain your strength and learn to survive out here."
The young man who had given Itus water suddenly perked up. "We can teach you!" he said enthusiastically. "That is... if you're willing to learn."
Itus looked around at the kind faces surrounding him, then back out at the unforgiving desert that had nearly claimed his life. He took a deep breath, weighing his options.
"Yeah, of course," Itus said with a nod, determination settling over him like a cloak.
The older woman smiled, approval shining in her eyes. "Good," she said. "We'll start your training tomorrow. For now, rest and regain your strength."
The elderly man winked at Itus, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. "And prepare yourself," he added. "Our lessons aren't easy, but they will keep you alive."
As the Dune Walkers returned to their tasks, Itus looked out at the desert, his expression thoughtful. I didn't expect this detour, he mused. But maybe... maybe this is exactly what I need.
